Introduction
To become a road haulage or passenger transport operator an individual is required by law to hold an operator's licence. As part of the procedure for obtaining and retaining this licence the individual must show that he/she is "professionally competent". If he/she is not eligible for "grandfather rights" then this is shown by either the possession of recognised professional qualifications or the holding of a Certificate of Professional Competence.
The Certificate of Professional Competence (C.P.C.) is a Department of Transport recognised qualification designed to show that the individual has attained a set level of knowledge in the major areas of his/her profession. Examinations to obtain the qualification are set and administered by the O.C.R. at various approved centres throughout the country. They are held four times a year with results published four to six weeks after.
Nightfreight Training Services has been running C.P.C. courses and has been an approved C.P.C. examinations centre since 1987. Courses cover both National and International qualifications.
If you are interested in taking the C.P.C. examination, read the rest of this brochure then contact our administration staff at Nightfreight Training Services to book on the course of your choice.
THE C.P.C. EXAMINATION
The C.P.C. examination set by the O.C.R. covers a large amount of information and it offers a rigorous test of knowledge. The examination paper consists of "multiple choice" questions where the student is required to tick the appropriate box on the answer sheet, and a case study.
The examination is divided into modules reflecting the different aspects of the qualification. These are as follows:-
MODULE 1 (THE CORE EXAMINATION) for both Freight National and Passenger National. There are 20 questions in 30 minutes. (70% pass mark required)
MODULE 2 (FREIGHT NATIONAL) 40 questions in 60 minutes. (70% pass mark required)
MODULE 4 (CASE STUDY) 90 minutes.(50% pass mark required)
MODULE 6 (FREIGHT INTERNATIONAL)
10-12 Questions - written answers.
3 Questions - short written response. (50% pass mark required)
An individual would sit the relevant modules for his/her particular C.P.C. Therefore Freight National C.P.C. would require the student to sit Modules 1, 2 and 4, and the International C.P.C. requires Module 6. A student can sit National and International examinations on the same day. Results are usually released within six weeks of the examination.
